Word tip

Same sound, check the meaning — “homophones sound alike, so let the meaning of the sentence decide”

  1. Read the whole sentence and work out the meaning it needs.
  2. Match the meaning to the spelling: flour = powder made from grain; flower = a bloom on a plant.
  3. Learn the tricky sets: there (place), their (belonging to them), they’re (they are); to, too, two.

Use it for: Spelling tests, dictation, and checking your own writing for mistakes a spell-checker will miss.

Worked example: Pick the right word: Chapatis are made from wheat ___. → flour

  1. The sentence is about what chapatis are made of — a powder from grain.
  2. That is flour (a flower grows on a plant).

Check: Wheat is ground into flour; a rose is a flower ✓
