Word tip

Clues all around — “the other words in the sentence point to the missing word”

  1. Read the whole sentence, including the part after the gap.
  2. Find the clue: a reason (because …), a result (so …) or a hint (turn off the tap).
  3. Try your word in the gap and read the sentence aloud — it must make sense.

Use it for: Fill-in-the-blanks questions in every English test, reading comprehension, and choosing the right word when you write.

Worked example: Choose the best word: We must ___ water; turn off the tap while brushing. → save

  1. The clue is “turn off the tap” — we should not let water run away.
  2. Not wasting water means we save it.

Check: “We must waste water” goes against the clue; “save” fits ✓
