How to say it

Hear it, then spell it — “say the word in beats, drop the silent letters and find the strong syllable”

  1. Say the word in beats and count them.
  2. Watch for silent letters and for spellings with more than one sound.
  3. Say the weak syllables lightly, as “uh”.

Use it for: Revising Part 2 before word stress and rhythm in Part 3.

Worked example: Which letter is silent in “write”? → w

  1. Say “write”: “rite”. You hear r and t.
  2. The w is written but not said: wr- at the start.

Check: write is said “rite” ✓
