In English one syllable of every word is strong: louder, longer and higher. Some words change their stress with their job: a RE-cord (noun) but to re-CORD (verb), a PRE-sent but to pre-SENT. Most two-syllable nouns and adjectives stress the first syllable (PEN-cil, HAP-py); many two-syllable verbs stress the second (be-GIN, de-CIDE).
