Colours and shapes — Vocabulary words for kids

Colour words name what we see — red, yellow, brown, grey — and mixing two paints makes a new colour. Shape words name flat shapes (circle, square, triangle, oval) and solid ones (sphere, cube, cone, cylinder).

Word tip

Look and mix — “picture the colour or shape, and mix two paints to get a new colour”

  1. Picture the thing to name its colour: grass is green, coal is black.
  2. Mix colours: blue + yellow = green, red + yellow = orange, red + blue = purple, red + white = pink, black + white = grey.
  3. Flat shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval. Solids: sphere (ball), cube (dice), cone, cylinder.

Use it for: Art and craft, describing pictures, maths lessons on shapes, and colouring activities.

Worked example: Mix the colours: blue + yellow = ___ → green

  1. Mixing two paint colours makes a new colour.
  2. Blue and yellow together make green.

Check: Try it with paints or crayons: blue over yellow looks green ✓
