Word tip

Flip the meaning — “an opposite means the very other end: hot ↔ cold”

  1. Think of the word’s meaning, then flip it to the other end: full ↔ empty.
  2. A word that is just different (hot and fast) is not an opposite.
  3. “but” in a sentence often signals an opposite: “An elephant is big, but an ant is small.”

Use it for: Describing and comparing things, “write the opposite” exercises, and early English tests.

Worked example: Which word is the opposite of “heavy”? → light

  1. Heavy means hard to lift.
  2. Easy to lift is light — the opposite of heavy.

Check: “A stone is heavy, a feather is light” ✓
