Word tip

Swap test — “put each option in place of the word — the synonym keeps the meaning”

  1. Think of what the word means.
  2. Put each option in its place in a sentence: “The film will begin / start at six.” The synonym keeps the meaning the same.
  3. Opposites and unrelated words are not synonyms.

Use it for: Making essays and stories more interesting, synonym exercises in school tests, and Olympiad English.

Worked example: Which word means the same as “begin”? → start

  1. Try each word: “The class will begin at nine” → “The class will start at nine.”
  2. The meaning stays the same, so start is the synonym.

Check: “finish” would change the meaning to the opposite — start keeps it ✓
