About these worksheets

How can we tell that something is alive? These EVS worksheets help young children answer that question by looking at pictures: circle the living things, cross out the non-living ones, sort pictures into two groups and find the things that grow. Living things breathe, eat, grow, move on their own and have young ones; a toy car moves but it does not eat or grow, so it is non-living — a great point to talk about.

The set also has fruit and vegetable sheets (match the fruits, colour an apple, a banana or a watermelon, match the vegetables) and a few simple science sheets about the wind and what it can move. The living / non-living sheets suit UKG and Class 1; the fruit and colouring pages suit Nursery and LKG. Take the sheet outdoors: let the child point to living and non-living things in the park and explain why. A short walk turns the worksheet into a real science lesson.

Skills practised

  • Features of living things: breathe, eat, grow, move, reproduce
  • Sorting living and non-living things
  • Names of fruits and vegetables
  • Observation of air and wind
  • Giving reasons in simple sentences

How to use these sheets

  1. Name every picture on the sheet.
  2. Ask: does it breathe, eat and grow?
  3. Circle, tick or sort the pictures the sheet asks for.
  4. Explain one answer in your own words.

Tip for parents and teachers: Plants confuse many children because they do not walk. Grow a seed in a cup for a week — seeing it grow and need water makes “plants are living” obvious.

How do I print a worksheet?
