About these worksheets

Spotting what is the same and what is different is one of the first thinking skills children learn, and it supports both maths and reading. On these sheets a child looks along a row of pictures and finds the one that is different — a different colour, size, direction or a small missing detail — or draws a line between objects that are exactly the same.

The sheets suit Nursery, LKG and UKG (ages 3 to 6). Ask the child to explain how the odd one is different: “this umbrella is open, the others are closed”. Putting the reason into words builds vocabulary such as big / small, open / closed, left / right. The same careful looking later helps children tell apart letters like b and d or numbers like 6 and 9. Start with rows of three and move to longer rows as the child gets faster. Two or three rows a day are enough at this age.

Skills practised

  • Visual discrimination — noticing small differences
  • Matching identical objects
  • Describing words: size, colour, direction
  • Attention to detail
  • Early reasoning (odd one out)

How to use these sheets

  1. Look at every picture in the row.
  2. Find the pictures that are exactly the same.
  3. Circle or colour the one that is different (or join the matching pair).
  4. Say how it is different.

Tip for parents and teachers: Play the same game with real things: put three spoons and a fork on the table and ask which one is different and why.
