About these worksheets

Every English letter has two forms, a capital (uppercase) letter and a small (lowercase) letter, and children need to know both are the same letter before they can read a sentence. These worksheets practise exactly that link. On the identification sheets the child finds and colours both forms of one letter; on the colouring sheets they colour only the pictures marked with the right letter; and on the matching sheets they draw lines between pairs such as A–a, G–g and Q–q.

Capital-and-small matching is usually taught in LKG and UKG, once the child knows most capital letters, and revised in Class 1. The tricky pairs are the ones that look different — A / a, B / b, D / d, G / g, Q / q, R / r — so spend more time on those. A quick game helps: write capitals on one set of cards and small letters on another, mix them, and let the child find the pairs.

Skills practised

  • Matching uppercase and lowercase letters A–Z
  • Telling apart look-alike letters (b / d, p / q)
  • Letter recognition for reading
  • Drawing straight matching lines
  • Colouring within lines

How to use these sheets

  1. Read the capital letter aloud, then find its small partner.
  2. Draw a line to join each pair, or colour both letters the same colour.
  3. Check that every letter has exactly one partner.
  4. Read the pairs aloud: “Capital B, small b”.

Tip for parents and teachers: The small letters b, d, p and q are mirror images and confuse almost every child. Teach b with “bat then ball” (stick first) and d with “drum then stick” (circle first).
