About these worksheets

Hearing the first sound of a word is the first real phonics skill, and it is what turns letter names into reading. On these worksheets a child looks at a picture, says the word slowly — “ffff-ish” — and links it to the letter it starts with. There are three kinds of sheets: “A for Aeroplane” letter pages, picture sheets where the child circles every object that starts with the letter’s sound, and “say and trace” sheets with beginning-sound words to trace.

They suit Nursery and LKG for listening and matching, and UKG and Class 1 for tracing the words. Always use the letter’s sound, not only its name: “b” says /b/ as in ball. Some pictures may have Indian or British names that differ from the sheet (a “sofa” may be drawn as a “couch”) — talk about it, that is good vocabulary practice. After the sheet, play “I spy something beginning with /m/” around the house.

Skills practised

  • Hearing the first sound in a spoken word
  • Matching letters to their sounds
  • Vocabulary — naming everyday pictures
  • Tracing beginning-sound words
  • Getting ready for blending CVC words

How to use these sheets

  1. Say each picture’s name slowly and stretch the first sound.
  2. Decide which letter makes that sound.
  3. Circle, match or colour the pictures that start with it.
  4. Trace the words and read them aloud.

Tip for parents and teachers: Teach the sound, not the name: say /s/ (a hiss), not “ess”. Keep the sound short for stop letters — /b/ not “buh” — so that blending words later is easier.

What are beginning sounds?

The first sound you hear in a word: “sun” begins with /s/, “mango” with /m/. Recognising them is the first step in phonics.

Which class are beginning sounds worksheets for?

Nursery to UKG (ages 3–6) for matching and colouring; UKG and Class 1 for the tracing sheets.

What comes after beginning sounds?

Ending sounds, then blending three-letter (CVC) words such as c-a-t. Our phonics lessons and CVC game continue from here.

Are these worksheets free?

Yes. Every sheet is free to open, print and download — no sign-up and no payment. You may use them at home, in tuition and in your classroom.

How do I print a worksheet?

Open the sheet, then press “Print” (or “Download Worksheet” to save the picture and print it later). Use plain A4 paper and choose “Fit to page” in the print settings so nothing is cut off.
