Short poems — Reading comprehension for kids

A poem is written in short lines, and the last words of the lines often rhyme: sun – fun, tree – free. Read the poem aloud, line by line. Each line tells you something — the answer is in one of the lines.

Reading tip

Read it like a song — “read the poem aloud; each line tells you one thing”

  1. Read the poem aloud, line by line.
  2. Find the line that talks about the thing in the question.
  3. Rhyming words end with the same sound: sky – high.

Use it for: Poem questions in Class 2 English, rhymes and recitation.

Worked example: What do the birds do in the poem? → sing

  1. Read the passage: The sun comes up, the sky is bright, / The birds all sing with all their might. / I wash my face and comb my hair, / Then eat my breakfast on a chair.
  2. Find the line with the answer: “The birds all sing with all their might.”
  3. These words give the answer: sing.

Check: The line “The birds all sing with all their might.” gives exactly “sing” ✓
